My main research interest at the moment is Digital Well-being, a topic which grew out of my 2013 book Technobiophilia: nature and cyberspace.  Recently my writing in that area has appeared at Orion MagazineThe Conversation, Aeon Magazine, Slate, and various other magazines and journals.

I’m a member of several research groups. The AHRC-funded Digital Reading Network brings together academics, practitioners, stakeholders and ordinary readers to explore the impact of digitisation on readers and reading, with a focus on the reading of literary texts. My contribution focuses upon transliteracy. Cyberparks is new EU COST project with many European partners which draws on my work on technobiophilia and Future Foresight. I also maintain a small information resource on the text-based world of LambdaMOO which I wrote about in my 2004 book Hello World: travels in virtuality.
