According to Keith Stuart of The Guardian, Activision, the company behind the very lucrative video game Skylanders has forged a twinning partnership with the real Isle of Skye. VisitScotland’s Alan Mackenzie said “We’re thrilled to be teaming up with the Skylanders franchise for this unique partnership, which will help raise the profile of this beautiful part of the world, encouraging families to enjoy a real-life adventure on the Isle of Skye – nowhere else on Earth comes close!”
Will it work? Whilst some video games have gorgeously complex landscapes, as I discussed recently in a post about GTA, the cartoon geographies of Skylanders are not at all rich or enticing. I can’t imagine how this relationship could raise the profile of Skye in any meaningful way but let’s see what the future holds.
